FRIENDS OF THE DOWN EAST LIBRARY MEMBERSHIP DRIVE The Friends of the Down East Library invites you to join our non-profit organization for 2012. Annual membership fees are $10 (Individual), $15 (Family), $16-$99 (Patron), $100-$499 (Founder) or $500 or more (Sponsor, lifetime paid member). The Friends provides volunteer and financial support to the Down East Public Library branch in Otway, and partners with Carteret Community College and local businesses, organizations and individuals to provide programming opportunities in the adjacent Resource Center. Membership applications can be picked up at the library, or if you prefer an application be emailed to you, send a request to Jane Wrenn (email@example.com), Friends’ Secretary. Annual membership dues are tax deductible.
COMPUTER FUN, USEFUL, EASY Carteret Community College is offering a Computer Fun, Useful, Easy class at the Friends of the Down East Library Resource Center in Otway, starting on February 28 and meeting for six sessions on Tuesdays, 3-4:30 p.m. Each week begins with a “how to” for practical and creative computer skills. Hands-on instruction will be provided in this high commitment to fun class. The course fee is $30. Call 222-6200 for more information or to sign up for the class.
GUITAR ABCs Carteret Community College is offering a Guitar ABCs class at the Friends of the Down East Library Resource Center in Otway, starting on February 29, meeting for six sessions on Wednesdays from 7-8:30 p.m. This class is for true beginners, who will learn seven basic chords and rhythm. The course fee is $45. Call 222-6200 for more information or to sign up for the class.
ART APPRECIATION The Friends of the Down East Library in Otway welcomes Bobbie Massie of Atlantic, as she leads an art appreciation discussion, What’s Modern and Contemporary Art All About?, on Monday, March 5 at 2 p.m. in the Resource Center. Bobbie will explore the development of art following the Post Impressionist period (Van Gogh and Gaugin) through the Modern period (1900-1950) and Contemporary period (1950 until today). Plans for three sessions will include an opportunity to create a piece of contemporary work within the group and hopefully will result in a “contemporary” art display for the library. WATERCOLOR ART CLASS The Friends of the Down East Library in Otway is pleased to host James Shuler of Straits, as he leads a new Watercolor Art Class starting on Monday, March 5, 6-9 p.m. This four-week class has limited seating, and the course fee is $50. Stop by the library to see our art exhibit featuring the artwork of James Shuler and sign up while you are at the library, or call 728-1333 to register.
INTRODUCTION TO MICROSOFT OFFICE Carteret Community College will be presenting an Introduction to Microsoft Office class at the Friends of the Down East Library Resource Center in Otway. The twelve-session class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon, starting March 6. This course is a great follow-up to Computers for Beginners, and participants will learn to create letters, spreadsheets, presentations and databases. The class fee is $120 for those under the age of 65, free to those 65 and older. All participants will need a workbook, approximately $30. Call CCC, 222-6200, to register.
CAKE DECORATING Back by popular demand, Cathy Willis of Bettie will lead another Cake Decorating class in the Friends of the Down East Library Resource Center in Otway. The six-week class meets on Tuesdays at 6 p.m., starting March 6. Cathy will teach you to create professional looking cakes and cupcakes to make all family occasions very special. DOWN EAST FAMILY HISTORY GROUP If you are interested in learning more about down east history or tracing your family’s genealogy, join some local experts at the Friends of the Down East Library Resource Center in Otway on Wednesday, March 7, at 3 p.m. Share local history information, discuss how to investigate the family tree, how to locate local resources, and what information is available at our County Courthouse if you know where to look. Learn little known resource tips and availability of ongoing assistance with your search. Dennis Chadwick of Straits coordinates this program, assisted by local experts Sonny Williamson and Jack Goodwin. This group meets regularly on the first Wednesday of the month at 3 p.m., with pre-registration required by calling the library at 728-1333.
OBSERVING THE WINTER SKY Join Dennis Chadwick to learn to identify the star constellations in our winter sky. Meet at the Harkers Island bridge on Wednesday, March 7, at 6:30 p.m. Learn how to identify Orion, Seven Sisters and other constellations, and be entertained by the Greek mythology connected to common constellations. ACRYLICS ART CLASS The Friends of the Down East Library in Otway welcomes Gloria Willis of Bettie, as she leads another Acrylics Art Class starting on Thursday, March 8 at 6:30 p.m. This four-week class has been quite popular in the past, so call now to reserve your seat. Learn to paint with Gloria’s guiding hand, and create a piece of artwork you will treasure. Seating is limited, and the cost is low at $10 per class date for supplies. BOOK STUDY GROUP The Friends of the Down East Library in Otway is pleased to host a new Book Study Group on March 11, 2012 at 7 p.m. in the Resource Center. Brad Williams of Harkers Island leads this study group, which focuses on personal growth and insight selections. The book being studied is “The Five Love Languages” by Gary Chapman, which addresses the keys to successful communication. Call Brad at 675-8891 for more information.
DOWN EAST READERS CLUB Starting in February, the Down East Readers Club will meet on the second Tuesday each month at 10 a.m. in the Friends of the Down East Library Resource Center in Otway, and welcomes new members to join in the fun. ELDERCARE AND THE FAMILY The Friends of the Down East Library hosts an educational series, Eldercare and the Family, in the Resource Center in Otway on the third Thursday each month, 3-4:30 p.m. The March 15 meeting will be led by Shannon Cook, social worker with Community Home Care and Hospice, who will share how hospice can help families dealing with dementia at home. HAND AND FOOT CANASTA The Friends of the Down East Library in Otway is pleased to host a Hand and Foot Canasta group on Tuesday, March 27, at 9:30 a.m. in the Resource Center. Don’t know how to play? SPRING FESTIVAL PLANT SALE The Friends of the Down East Library in Otway will host its third annual Spring Festival Plant Sale on May 5, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the former library location in Smyrna, at the corner of Highway 70 and Whitehurst Road. If you have a green thumb and would like to help the library by donating plants for our sale, please contact Fred Bisbee, 729-7681, to let him know. HOMEWORK HELP, Tuesdays and Thursdays, Down East Library Resource Center, Otway. If your elementary child could use some homework help, the Friends of the Down East Library offers this service by appointment. There is limited seating, so call Nancy Dale, 729-1339, to register in advance.
TOPS A "Take Off Pounds Sensibly" chapter of the TOPS non-profit organization meets at the Friends of the Down East Library Resource Center in Otway every Wednesday at 10:45 a.m. It is all about a healthy lifestyle and friendly support. KNIT WITS, the Down East Knitter’s Club, is open to everyone who enjoys knitting, crochet, embroidery and other crafts. The group meets each Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Friends of the Down East Library Resource Center in Otway. Come share patterns and ideas, and enjoy the company of some Down East crafters.
